Branding

Introduction

TranslationThe pending.openthinclient Management Server enables organizations to customize the appearance of their thin clients. The goal is to ensure a consistent, professional look in line with corporate design and to enhance user-friendliness through visual guidance.

Whether it’s a logo, background image, or application icons — with just a few adjustments, the standard layout of the thin clients can be adapted to company-specific requirements.

Note, the system implements this via the Custom folder.
This article describes the what and why of branding.

Possible customizations

Background image

Replace the standard wallpaper with a custom background image, e.g., a company logo or an image in the corporate design.

    Recommended format: .png

Default path in the Custom folderrootfs/usr/share/wallpapers/openthinclient/default.png

    Application icons

Custom icons enable more intuitive user guidance and reflect the organization’s design concept.

      Format: .png or .svg

Location in the Custom folder: icons/

In the application configuration, assign the custom icon by specifying the file name.

      Certificates

Corporate environments with their own certification authorities (CAs) can integrate their SSL certificates to, e.g., display valid browser warnings.

        Typical use cases:

          Certificates for the browser

          Citrix certificates

          System-wide SSL certificates

          Storage locations:

            browser-ssl-certs/

            ica-ssl-certs/

            system-certs/

            Desktop files and shortcuts

Place documents, notes, or shortcuts on the desktop — e.g., instructions, support contacts, or direct links to internal applications.

Path structure in the Custom folderrootfs/home/tcos/Desktop/

              Design recommendations

Consider resolution and aspect ratio: Thin clients can use different resolutions — a central motif with a flexible background ensures content remains visible.

Optimize file sizes: Use small files to reduce load times during the boot process.

Test with multiple clients: Check the appearance on different models and screen sizes.

                Conclusion

Branding with openthinclient is easy to implement and offers plenty of creative freedom. Through targeted visual customizations, companies can integrate their thin clients into their own design while simultaneously improving the user experience.
