Idle Timeout

Symptom

An RDP session may disconnect from the server due to inactivity or a timeout.

On the thin client, the RDP client closes and an error dialog opens:

  • Exit Code: 3
  • Error Name: IDLE_TIMEOUT

Configuring Session Timeouts

Set timeouts for RDP sessions using Group Policy Objects (GPOs). Do this in the domain GPO Editor (gpmc.msc) or in the Local Group Policy Editor (gpedit.msc).

The timeout settings for RDP sessions can be found here:

Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Remote Desktop Services > Remote Desktop Session Host > Session Timeouts

Configure the error dialog suppression.

In the FreeRDP settings, suppress the error dialog so the RDP session closes cleanly. Set the following options:

  • Suppress error dialogs: Yes
  • Suppress error dialogs for these exit codes: 3
