Update
Update existing installations within the openthinclient Management Server.¹
For a description of the update process, read the article Performing an Update.
¹If using the virtual appliance, install a new appliance and migrate the data, at least for major releases. |
New Features, Updates, and Improvements
openthinclient Manager
The openthinclient Manager has been fully moved to the browser. For several versions now, some of the functionality of the old Webstart Manager has been accessible via the web interface. With version 2019.1, the new WebUI is fully functional.
Use the built-in VNC viewer to connect to thin clients after assigning a Remote Connect application.
For customers already familiar with the previous UI, the old Webstart Manager remains available in this version.
Operating System
- The operating system has been fully migrated to Debian 9, allowing support for more modern hardware.
- It adopts systemd instead of initV, reducing boot time by about 20%.
- To accommodate older hardware, data compression over the network has been slightly reduced. As a result, approximately 180 MB is transferred per boot process (about 15% more). Our thin clients can decompress and process the data about 25% faster.
Citrix
The Citrix application package includes the new Citrix Workspace App 1903. The new application package brings several improvements and bug fixes. Among other things:
- Audio transmission via UDP is enabled by default.
- The Philips driver's been updated to version G12.7.
- Auto-detection of certain USB devices (Philips, Grundig, Signotec) and automatic activation of the virtual channel.
- The H264 video codec is fully supported.
FreeRDP
The FreeRDP application is constantly being improved by the developers and is nearing the stable 2.0 release. The selected version includes several improvements compared to the 2018.1 package:
- Support for AVC420 (RDP8.1) and AVC440 (RDP10) video compression.
- Use the floating bar to detach or minimize the FreeRDP window, similar to the Windows client.
Support for Devacon and Grundig will resume as soon as the manufacturers release compatible drivers; an update will then ship promptly.
rdesktop
After many years, the rdesktop package has finally received a security update. As a result, support for forwarding from older Cherry EGK card readers (1503 - 1504) is now deprecated.
Localboot
Several improvements to the localboot package enhance autonomous startup. It now starts reliably even when the openthinclient server is unreachable.
Known issues
openthinclient-Manager
The installer now verifies compatibility with Oracle Java 8 before proceeding. Ensure Oracle Java 8 is installed.
Thin client groups have been removed. If updating the openthinclient-Manager to 2019.1 from an older version, use the old WebStart Manager (http://<openthinclient-server>:8080/console/launch.jnlp open) to delete the thin client groups.
The display of assignments is incomplete; for example, it may omit applications assigned to a user via a user group.
Virtual Appliance
The virtual appliance may require additional configuration to start in Oracle VirtualBox; it pauses with a black screen due to an incorrect operating system setting. As a workaround, after importing the appliance, select Linux as the type and Debian (64-bit) as the version in the properties.
Citrix
Version 1903 of Citrix Receiver has a manufacturer-provided list of known issues; it's available on the Citrix website.
FreeRDP
FreeRDP is under continuous development. The developers track all known issues in the GitHub Issue Tracker.
When using Terminal Server ≤ 2008R2, use rdesktop instead of FreeRDP.
rdesktop
Use rdesktop for connections that don't require TLS; see arch-linux-bug.
Display Settings
Like all modern Linux systems, it uses KMS (Kernel Mode Setting). As a result, display port names may change after the update. Therefore, adjust the setting in the "Display" device settings. Alternatively, under "Use specific graphics driver" in the hardware settings, select "Use Xorg-Intel driver" instead of KMS.
Glamor Acceleration with AMD Graphics (radeon)
Starting with version 2018.1, Glamor acceleration is always enabled by default for AMD graphics cards. If the graphics cards require additional configuration and no graphical interface appears, set the additional kernel parameter `glamor=false` in the hardware type or directly on the thin client.
See: https://www.freedesktop.org/wiki/Software/Glamor/
Boot process pauses on some thin clients
If the boot process on certain thin clients stops with the error message "Waiting for network. Thin client is offline. Please check cable," this may be due to the thin client waiting for a response from the init for a response from the DHCP server and times out.
To resolve the issue, update the base package to version 2019.1.1 or higher.
