Display Issues with Intel Graphics Cards

Artifacts occasionally occur on hardware with Intel graphics cards (e.g., PCI-ID 8086:22b1). These manifest as mouse cursors that sometimes jump around erratically on their own, often leaving a mouse trail behind.

Here's an extreme example:

In addition to the mouse trails shown here, the issue can also manifest as small blocks around the mouse pointer. Occasionally, these display effects appear within an RDP or Citrix session rather than on the Linux desktop.

The reason for this is most likely the window manager used by MATE marcocontains a compositing bug. compton it functions correctly on the Linux desktop yet shows errors under FreeRDP — specifically with Windows Server 2012. For example, window fragments stay in their old positions after moving a window.

Starting with version 2020.1, use the hardware type switch for compositors.
